Seven Ways to Praise The Lord

Did you know there were seven “ways to praise” the Lord in worship? Seven distinct Hebrew words used for His praise. Psalm 100:4 uses four of these words in just one verse. All told, these seven words are used 754 times in the Old Testament.

We should not need to ask why God would put so many times and so many ways to praise the Lord. Praising that which is praiseworthy not only lifts up God, but it helps us.

Don’t you enjoy telling someone else how good something was? When you find a really good restaurant, don’t you go around to others and “praise” the food?

It brings an attitude of gratitude in our hearts. We look for the good in all of the bad. Prayer meetings often center around the hurting, sick and dying, but worship is a celebration of Great our God is. No wonder the Lord dwells in the praise of His people. We should too. Let us raise His praise.

Worship (Hebrew Halal) used 165 times, it is the root word from which we get Hallelujah. See Ps. 113:1[1]

Obeisance (Hebrew Barak) used 330 times, it means to bow down and used in Ps. 95:6[2] See also Ps. 72:15.

Raise Praise (Hebrew: Shabach) used 11 times, it means to shout to God as in Ps. 106:47,[3]

Sincerity of Spirit (Hebrew Yadah) used 114 times and literally means “lifting up of hands”. See Ps. 9:1[4]

Honesty and truth (Hebrew Todah) used 32 times, mostly as thanksgiving and used in a vow by lifting hands. See Ps. 56:12[5]

Instruments in Worship (Hebrew Zamar) used 45 times, means to praise with instruments. See Ps. 33:2[6]

Proclamation of Praise (Worship Tehillah) used 57 times, always translated as vocalized praise. See Ps. 22:3[7]

[1] Praise the LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD, Praise the name of the LORD!
[2] Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.
[3] Save us, O LORD our God, And gather us from among the Gentiles, To give thanks to Your holy name, To triumph in Your praise.
[4] I will praise You, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works.
[5] Vows made to You are binding upon me, O God; I will render praises to You
[6] Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.
[7] But You are holy, Enthroned in the praises of Israel.

Daily Praying the Word

PRAYING GOD’S WORD: More than 300 Bible verses are included in this book to effectively guide you in praying God’s infallible Word back to Him. Twelve times in Psalm 119 the writer tells of God’s faithfulness “according to Your Word”:

  1.       to cleanse us as we obey (v. 9),
  2.       to revive us when we’re discouraged (v. 25),
  3.       to strengthen us in sadness (v. 28),
  4.       to save us in love (v. 41),
  5.       to receive God's mercy (v. 58),
  6.       to do good to us (v. 65),
  7.       to comfort us (v. 76),
  8.       to renew us (v. 107),
  9.       to uphold us (v. 116),
  10.       to protect us (v. 154),
  11.       to teach us (v. 169), and
  12.       to answer our prayers (170)

One way of praying God’s word is to paraphrase a verse into a prayer of your own. For instance, when you read…

6Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 7For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8And having food and clothing, with these we will be content.
1 Timothy 6:6-8
3Give us day by day our daily bread.
Luke 11:3
…pray it in the following way:
“Dear Lord, help me to see that I need to be content. Thank you for my daily food today and for my clothing and shelter and all my basic needs.”

Feel free to copy and paste these pages into a word document or onto your mobile device and personalize it with your own daily requests. Songs are included to sing His praise back to Him. May God bless both the reading of His word and the prayers of His saints. Amen.

11Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13Therefore take to you the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness; 15and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16above all, taking the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end, with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.
Ephesians 6:11-18

7Two things have I request of You; (Deprive me not before I die): 8Remove falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food You prescribe for me; 9Lest I be full, and deny You, and say, “Who is the LORD?” or lest I be poor and steal, and profane the name of my God.

3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh: 4For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5casting down arguments, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

Hebrews 10:24-25
11Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

Friday Praying the Word

Church Ministry; Governing Authorities

Please Pray:
...for the direct ministry our church has to Killeen.
....for those in our government, who minister to us (Rom. 13:4, 6).

1. Adult, Youth, Children and Preschool Ministries. That we would impact the world.
4Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. 6Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things.
Philippians 4:4-8
17(T)hat Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height—19to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Ephesians 3:17-19
15And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”
Mark 16:15
20I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Galatians 2:20

3For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.
 Colossians 3:3-4
17And Elisha prayed and said, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes, that he may see.” And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
2 Kings 6:17

GOVERNING AUTHORITIES
1I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2For kings, and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.
1 Timothy 2:1-2

1. Current officials. For men and women to lead us in a tranquil, godly society.
1Let every soul be subject unto the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities exist are appointed by God. 2Therefore whoever resists the authority, resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 3For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same: 4For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him practices evil. 5Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience’ sake. 6For because of this you also pay taxes for they are God’s ministers, attending continually to this very thing. 7Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes is due; custom to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.
Romans 13:1-7

2. Future officials. The election of such people.
12Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, The people He has chosen as His own inheritance.
Psalm 33:12

3. Their responsibility. Pray for wisdom to know right and the strength to do it.
7For what great nation is there that has God so near to it, as the LORD our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon Him?
 Deuteronomy 4:7

4. Our responsibility. Pray we would vote for those who would best govern, then encourage them
13Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, 14or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. 15For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men- 16as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. 17Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
1 Peter 2:13-17
14If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14

Ephesians 4:1-3
7 Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct. 17Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.

15Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of his eyes and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17And the world is passing away and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Wednesday Praying the Word

Making Disciples

Please Pray:
...that we would glorify God through making disciples,
fulfilling the Great Commandment (Mark 12:30-31)
and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).

1. The Great Commandment: Pray that we show our love for God and each other.
30 “ ‘And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. 31And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Mark 12:30-31

12This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
John 15:12

35By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.
John 13:35

20“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21that they all may be one; as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be one in Us; that the world may believe that You sent Me.”
John 17:20-21

2(F)ulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord of one mind. 3Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
Philippians 2:2-4

10Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
1 Corinthians 1:10

14For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Galatians 5:14

2. The Great Commission: Pray that we would be disciples of Christ, making disciples.
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.
Matthew 28:18-20

Ø    For our families to grow together as disciples.
15“Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve...But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”
Joshua 24:15
1Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.
Psalm 127:1

2That the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things. 4that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. 6Likewise exhort the young men to be sober-minded.
Titus 2:2-6

19Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.
Colossians 3:19

1Likewise, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, 2when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear. 7Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.
1 Peter 3:1-2, 7
20Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. 21Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
Colossians 3:18-21

9 How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. 10With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! 11Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.
Psalm 119:9-11

12Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
1 Timothy 4:12

1Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come and the years draw near when you say, “I have no pleasure in them.”
Ecclesiastes 12:1

Ø   For singles and their children to be discipled, using this season to glorify Him
7 For I wish that all men were even as I myself. But each one has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that. 8But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even as I am.
1 Corinthians 7:7-8
32b He who is unmarried cares for the things of the Lord--how he may please the Lord. 34b The unmarried woman cares about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit.
1 Corinthians 7:32b, 34b

Ø    In our lives. Pray we would bear fruit following Christ.

8By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
John 15:8
And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
Luke 14:27
